Starting Out On Your Own? How To Save Money When Furnishing Your Home

It's not easy setting out on your own. In fact, setting up your first home can be downright expensive. That's why it's important that you save money wherever you can. One way to save money is to purchase your new furniture carefully. Buying the right furniture can not only save you money, it can ensure that your furniture lasts longer. Here are four simple steps you can take to get your moneys worth out of the furniture you buy for your first home.

Consider How It Will Be Used

When you're furnishing your first home, it can be easy to get caught up in the thrill of the moment. Unfortunately, that can lead to some mistakes along the way. One mistake you should avoid is buying without considering the use. While you're picking out your furniture, especially the upholstered furniture, be sure to consider who, and what, will be using it. For instance, if you've got pets, you don't want to buy a light-colored couch. You also don't want to buy a light-colored couch if you plan on having children soon. Grimy, sticky hands on a light-colored couch can ruin it very quickly.

Go With Neutrals

When choosing large pieces for your new home, avoid going with loud, patterned fabrics. Leave those choices for your smaller accent pieces. The last thing you want is a brightly colored couch that you might tire of in a year or so. If that happens, you'll either have to live with your choice, or get rid of it before you've gotten your moneys worth out of it. Choose colors that go with just about everything for your larger pieces, such as couches and love seats.

Pay Attention to the Couch Cushions

When you're buying your couches and love seats, you want to pay attention to the cushions. First, sit down and spend a few minutes getting comfortable. Choose a couch that feels like something you'd want to spend time on. Next, flip the couch cushions over. If the underside of the cushions are upholstered in a different fabric, or isn't actually upholstered at all, move on to the next couch. You want a couch that is upholstered with the same fabric on both sides. This will allow you to flip the cushions once a month to provide even wear and tear.

Look for Floor Models

When you're first starting out, you want to save money wherever you can. One way to save money when shopping for new furniture is to look for floor models. Many furniture stores will provide discounted prices for display furniture.
